However when Steinbeck introduces the dog at first, Candy says ââ¬Å"my dogâ⬠, this possessive lexis could suggest Candy is proud of his dog especially as he goes on to say ââ¬Å"he was a good sheepdog when he was youngerâ⬠, you could take this quote as a declarative, him protecting but also bragging about his dog. A conflicting idea could be that Candy and dog are similar that is why Candy likes to talk and brag about his dog, Steinbeck writes for both that they are ââ¬Å"oldâ⬠and ââ¬Å"ancientâ⬠but both are disabled in that Candy has lost his hand and the dog is so old and decrepit it cannot hunt or feed itself. The opening sequence we see a circle of light, a metaphor for everlasting life, everything is in complete darkness except the for this circle, the forces of evil and the force of good are both represented and both will play roles in the play.
